The first role is ‘to penetrate the hook’. This is obvious but a hook without axis cannot penetrate. The axis of the hook is there to define the penetration direction of the hook point when hooking. In terms of hooking performance of a hook, shorter the axis makes the direction of the hooking point regarding the penetration more important, whereas longer the axis makes it less important. Therefore, if the axis is longer and the hooking point is pointed towards roughly to the target, then it can penetrate. However, hook with long axis does not mean it is good. This is because longer the axis makes it heavier. For the jigging that is not the bite-induced fishing on the hook itself, the hook should be as light as possible. The second role is to protect the shock leader when fighting against sharp-toothed fish. When the hook is stuck around the mouth and if the axis is loner, it can protect the line breakage as the distance between the teeth and shock leader is far apart. ‘IJIKA’ was developed aiming to make light and good penetration hook without making the axis too long unnecessarily. The straight hooking point differs from the hook with curve point that it can penetrate deep as it goes straight through the target.
